Pert, blue-eyed, dimple-cheeked Joan was born Joan Leslie Freeman in Council Bluffs, Iowa, one of two daughters of a Brink's Express Guard and a homemaker. She spent her early education at the (now defunct) Catholic Villa Cabrini Academy in Burbank and later attended John Burroughs High School, graduating in 1959. Joan began on both screen and stage as a child performer and toiled for several years in minor or nondescript supporting roles. In 1961, she made her breakthrough as the waitress Elma in the TV series Bus Stop (1961), adapted from the play by William Inge. As a newly minted starlet, she now received a respectable weekly paycheck of $500, as well as commensurate promotional build-up from 20th Century Fox.
In 1962, Joan had back-to-back leading roles in a couple of AIP films: the dystopian drama Panic in Year Zero! (1962) and the gothic horror Tower of London (1962) (as Lady Margaret Stanley). She also co-starred as Elvis Presley 's love interest in the musical Roustabout (1964) and later appeared in the supporting cast of the comedy western The Rounders (1965). Already nominated as "Most Promising New Star" by the magazine Photoplay, Joan joined a gaggle of other hopefuls as a Hollywood Deb Star in 1963.
However, real stardom never came to pass. Perhaps this was due to a measure of ambivalence Joan had about her acting career. As late as 1961, she was quoted saying that she wished to become a certified practicing account (having earlier studied accountancy at San Fernando College). It is unclear as to whether she was ever active in that profession. On the screen, Joan continued to act --primarily in television guest spots-- well into the mid-80s, including repeat appearances as different characters in The Virginian (1962) and Lassie (1954). Her final role on the big screen was as Mrs. Jarvis, the 29th victim of Jason Vorhees in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984).
Joan was first married to Frank Beetson Jr., a one-time costume supervisor at John Wayne's independent production company Batjac. This union ended in divorce four years later. Her second husband (from 1976) is the second feature director Bruce Kessler, an ex-Formula One racing driver. Kindred spirits as avid explorers, Bruce and Joan Kessler have acquired a huge reputation in the sailing community and circumnavigated the globe on more than one occasion.- Actress

Langdon first performed when he ran away from home at the age of 12-13 to join a travelling medicine show. In 1903 he scored a lasting success in vaudeville with an act called "Johnny's New Car" which he performed for twenty years. In 1923, he signed with Principal Pictures as a series star, but transferred to the Mack Sennett Studio when Mack Sennett bought the contract. Early in his film career, he had the good fortune to work regularly with the young Frank Capra. The two developed a unique character of an innocent man-child who found himself in dramatic and hazardous circumstances with only providence and good luck making him come out on top. This character clicked with the public and Langdon enjoyed a streak of artistic and commercial successes using it with Capra's direction. Unfortunately, he began to take the praise of his talent too seriously and broke with Capra so he could hog all the glory himself with his films. This proved to be a disastrous mistake as his first film "Three's a Crowd", a sickeningly sentimental film that plainly showed that he did not even approach the talent and skill of Capra which was needed to keep his character style viable. It has been also speculated the public was getting tired of Langdon's character, which contributed to Langdon's first solo film being an artistic and commercial failure. That film was the first in a series of bombs that ruined Langdon's career and relegated him to minor films from third string companies for the rest of his life.- Writer

One of the outstanding cinematographers of Hollywood's Golden Age, Lang spent most of his career at Paramount (1929-1952), where he contributed to the studio's well-earned reputation for visual style. Lang was educated at Lincoln High School in L.A., then proceeded to the University of Southern California to study law. He quickly changed his career plans, however, and joined his father, the photographic technician Charles Bryant Lang Sr, at the small Realart Studio. He served a lengthy apprenticeship as a laboratory assistant and still photographer, before advancing to assistant cameraman, working with pioneering cinematographers H. Kinley Martin and L. Guy Wilky. Lang left Realart in 1922, had a stint with the Preferred Picture Corporation, then joined Paramount which had, by then, absorbed Realart at the end of the decade. In 1929, he became a full director of photography.
During the 1930's, Lang was one of a formidable team of cinematographers working at Paramount, including such illustrious craftsmen as Lee Garmes, Karl Struss and Victor Milner. At this time, the studio dominated the Academy Awards for cinematography, particularly in the field of black & white romantic and period film. Lang excelled in the use of chiaroscuro, light and shade, and was adept at creating the mood for every genre and style, from the sombre Peter Ibbetson (1935) to the glamour of Desire (1936) and the Parisian chic of Midnight (1939). Lang was an innovator in the use of long tracking shots. He was also liked by many female stars, such as Helen Hayes and Marlene Dietrich (and, later, Audrey Hepburn, because of his uncanny ability to photograph them to their best advantage, often using subdued lighting and diffusion techniques. Though nominated eighteen times for Academy Awards, he won just once, for A Farewell to Arms (1932). Among his many outstanding films of the 30's and 40's, are the lavishly photographed Bob Hope comedy/thriller The Cat and the Canary (1939) and the romantic, atmospheric The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947).
Lang's work with chiaroscuro lighting adapted itself perfectly to the expressionist neo-realism of films noir in the 1950's, most noteworthy examples being Ace in the Hole (1951) and The Big Heat (1953). He was at his best working with the directors Billy Wilder and Fritz Lang. The success of films like Sabrina (1954), Separate Tables (1958) and Some Like It Hot (1959) - all Oscar nominees for Lang's cinematography - owed much to his excellent camera work. Though he preferred the medium of black & white, he became equally proficient in the use of colour photography, working with different processes (Cinerama, VistaVision, etc.) on expansive, richly-textured and sweeping outdoor westerns like The Magnificent Seven (1960) and How the West Was Won (1962), as well as romantic thrillers like Charade (1963) and How to Steal a Million (1966). In 1990, Lang received a Special Eastman Kodak Award for colour cinematography.
Lang was known in the industry as one of the 'best-dressed men' behind the cameras, modest, yet a perfectionist and a consummate professional. He lived to the ripe old age of 96, dying in Santa Monica, California, in April 1998.- Actor

On stage from the age of seven, Martha Sleeper began on screen in her early teens as a comic actress for Hal Roach. After her successful debut in the independently produced farce The Mailman (1923), she found herself cast in a series of child comedies with Buddy Messinger and a brace of one- and two-reel shorts opposite Charley Chase with titles like All Wet (1924) and Crazy Like a Fox (1926). Being voted a WAMPAS Baby Star in 1927 was a further boon to her popularity. An attempt was made to turn her into an eccentric knockabout comedienne in the vein of Gale Henry, but this failed to come off. She was subsequently used in rather more subtle domestic farce, such as in Pass the Gravy (1928) , as Max Davidson's daughter, frenetically trying to communicate with him by mime. Her last role of note in silent comedy was as a rather perfunctory leading lady in Stan Laurel's last solo effort, Should Tall Men Marry? (1928).
Her contract with Roach was not renewed due to a fiscal downsizing of the company in 1928, so Martha moved over to FBO. This was a Poverty Row outfit that specialized in low-budget features--often westerns--for the Midwest market. No prints of the six films Martha made for FBO are believed to have survived. After 1930, she bounced around among the studios, appearing in supporting roles--often as the "other woman"--in melodramas for MGM, Paramount and RKO. At the same time, growing ever more restless in Hollywood, she sought work on the stage. In an interview, she asserted that she had been given "permission to take jobs in the theater in downtown Los Angeles. That's unheard of, a contract player wanting to have time for stage work" (NY Times, April 7,1983).
In 1936, Martha and her actor-husband Hardie Albright left the West Coast for New York to begin a ten-year run on- and off-Broadway. At the same time she developed a lucrative sideline of designing idiosyncratic costume jewelry, mostly made from bakelite, wood and metal. This blossomed into a respectable $300,000-a-year business and earned Martha the sobriquet of "The Gadget Girl". Her varied creations--including tarantula brooches, necklaces of sun-drenched strawberries and collars of champagne bubbles and swizzle sticks--were hugely popular with the general public, the jet set and film stars like Dolores Del Río and Fay Wray.
In 1949, Martha settled on the island of Puerto Rico, sold her possessions in New York and reinvented herself yet again, as proprietor of a boutique in San Juan, designing and manufacturing fashionable women's clothes. She remained on the island until her retirement in 1969, spending her remaining years on her second husband's plantation near Charleston in South Carolina.- Peggy Shannon was born Winona Sammon on January 10, 1907, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She attended Catholic school where she became friends with child actress Madge Evans. While visiting her aunt in New York sixteen year old Peggy was discovered by producer Florenz Ziegfeld Jr.. He hired her as a chorus girl in The Ziegfeld Follies. Peggy married actor Alan Davis in 1926. The following year she was starring on Broadway in Earl Carrol's production of What Anne Brought Home. In 1931 she was offered a contract at Paramount studios. With her beautiful face and red hair Peggy was promoted as "the new Clara Bow". When Clara suffered a nervous breakdown Peggy was given her role in The Secret Call (1931). Although she starred in the films This Reckless Age (1932) and Hotel Continental (1932), her career never really took off. She also developed a reputation for being difficult to work with. After her movie contract was not renewed she tried returning to Broadway. Unfortunately by this time she had serious drinking problem and was fired from the play The Light Behind The Shadow. Peggy continued to get small parts in B-movies like Youth on Parole (1937) and Cafe Hostess (1940). She divorced Alan in 1940 and married camera man Al Roberts. On May 11, 1941 her husband returned home from a trip and found Peggy slumped over the kitchen table. She had died from a heart attack at the young age of thirty-four. Her autopsy revealed that she had a serious liver ailment caused by her alcoholism. Three weeks after her death Albert committed suicide. Peggy is buried at Hollywood Forever cemetery in Hollywood, California. The epitaph on her tombstone says "That Red Headed Girl, Peggy Shannon".

Lela Rogers, the mother of movie legend Ginger Rogers, was notable and accomplished in her own right. She was born Lela Emogene Owens in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa. Her parents were Walter Winfield Owens, a carpenter, and Sophronia W. (Ball), a widow who worked as a grocery store clerk. As a raconteur at Hollywood parties later in life, Lela Rogers described the circumstances of her birth on Christmas Day, when Ball went into labor as she fended off a bear in the family barn.
Rogers, who had three younger sisters, and her parents led peripatetic lives until settling at Kansas City, Mo. Rogers attended public school through eighth grade, then went to business school to become a stenographer. On her birthday in 1909, she married electrical engineer William Eddins McMath. She moved to nearby Independence in 1911 to become a newspaper reporter, and her illustrious daughter, Virginia, was born there that year.
After divorcing McMath, Rogers moved to Hollywood by 1916 to write scripts under the name Lela Leibrand. When World War I began, she was one of the first 10 women to enlist in the Marine Corps. She handled publicity duties. She wed John Rogers in 1920 in Kansas City. From 1938 to 1945, Lela Rogers worked as an assistant to Charles Kerner, vice president in charge of production at RKO studios. Rogers was put in charge of the studio's new talent. In 1942, she played Ginger's mother in the classic comedy, The Major and the Minor (1942), about a woman's adventures trying to get home to Iowa from New York.
Rogers was a founding member of the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals. She testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947. A devout Christian Scientist, she died in Los Angeles in 1977.- Writer

Reed Fish was born on 18 September 1973 in Red Bluff, California, USA. He is a writer and actor, known for I'm Reed Fish (2006).- A forgotten starlet of 1930s B-movies was Lillian Elizabeth Guenther, a pretty, hazel-eyed blonde of German ancestry. Her family moved from Arkansas to California when she was a child. In the early 20s, she had bit parts in a couple of silent pictures. During her subsequent hiatus from film work, Janet completed her education at the Orton School for Girls in Pasadena, then spent five years as a theatrical dancer. She also had a lucrative sideline as a model in southern California, often employed by exclusive fashion houses. In 1932, she was selected as a junior hostess representing Arkansas at the Los Angeles Olympics. The following year, she was signed by Fox and starred in only her second film for the studio opposite George O'Brien in The Golden West (1932). Unfortunately, her next venture turned out to be a box-office bomb and Janet was dropped by the studio. Though she stayed on the Hollywood periphery as a lead actress for another three years, she was already condemned to bottom-of-the-bill sage brush operas and melodramas for Poverty Row outfits like Weiss Brothers, Peerless and Reliable. Sometime in 1935 -- presumably on the set of Rough Riding Ranger (1935) -- she had an accident which prompted her to retire from acting. That same year, she married a New York investment broker, became Lillian Barrett and, for all intents and purposes, left show business behind.
